Balconies, terraces and views: the charm of outdoor space

Intro

In the real estate world, the terms "balcony" and "terrace" are often used interchangeably, but do we really know the difference? Which of these spaces offers better views and outdoor experiences for residents?

In this article, we will explore the difference between balconies and terraces, as well as the importance of having them in real estate. Condominio El Canal prides itself on being a community designed and oriented to be close to nature. Our apartments all have a view, balcony and allow you to integrate and enjoy the green views of the mountains of Grecia.

What is a balcony and what is a terrace?

A balcony is a projecting platform attached to the wall of a building, which tends to be protected by railings. Our design is with glass so that more parts of the view can be appreciated. It then has a protective railing that secures and allows the user to lean against. Generally, a balcony is smaller and is designed to allow residents to look outside without having to go down to ground level.

A terrace is an outdoor space, often level and paved, that can be elevated or at ground level. In our home designs, we have a concept of terraces leading to the garden. Terraces are usually larger than balconies and offer a larger space for outdoor activities such as dining, relaxing or socializing.

History of balconies in the world and in Costa Rica

Balconies have a long history dating back to antiquity. Examples of balconies can be found in Roman architecture. They were used as spaces for observation and recreation. In medieval Europe, balconies became a symbol of status and power, with elaborate structures adorning palaces and aristocratic residences.

Meanwhile, in Costa Rica, balconies also have a rich tradition. In colonial architecture, balconies were a common feature in homes and public buildings. They provided a space for residents to enjoy the tropical climate and observe daily life on the streets.

In Costa Rica, it is common for an apartment to have a balcony, in certain places.

At our community in Greece, we are proud to say that most of our apartments offer balconies with spectacular views. Whether you prefer to gaze at the sunset, the trees, the mountains or the general scenery, our balconies are designed to maximize the views.

The average area of a comfortable balcony

The size of balconies can vary considerably, but in general, a comfortable balcony usually has at least a few square meters of usable space. This makes it possible to place outdoor furniture, potted plants and create a cozy atmosphere. Here residents can enjoy the fresh air and panoramic views.

The balconies have space for furniture, chairs, table. The best part is the view.

The balconies of our different designs range in size from very large to very small. In the K3 tower, which we expect to have ready in 2025, the 151 m2 apartments have a large balcony that is 11.96 meters long and 1.74 meters deep. That's a total of 20.8 m2 of area. A mid-size apartment in the K2 tower, which is already available, is 119 m2 and the balcony is 7.39 meters long and 2.7 meters deep, for a total of 19.9 m2. The studios in L1, the tower with 1 or 2-bedroom apartments, are smaller. For example, a 67 m2 apartment has a small balcony 3.32 m long and 2.14 m deep for a total of 7.1 m2. This is relative.

Benefits of having a balcony and views

Balconies are not just extensions of our homes. They are places where we can connect with nature and enjoy the benefits of the outdoors. The benefits of having a balcony with a view include:

  • Mental well-being: Spending time outdoors and taking in scenic views can help reduce stress, improve mood and increase feelings of happiness and well-being.
  • General Health: Exposure to sunshine and fresh air can be beneficial to physical health, helping to regulate sleep, strengthen the immune system and increase vitamin D levels.
  • Entertaining: Balconies with views offer a perfect space to gather with friends and family, host outdoor dinners or simply enjoy a cup of coffee while taking in the scenery.
